Heart defect repaired with a fully absorbable device, a "European first" at the Sant'Eugenio Hospital in Rome.

Innovative percutaneous treatment of atrial septal defects. The goal is a minimally invasive approach for anomalies such as patent foramen ovale. Among the advantages is the reduction of long-term complications associated with the presence of permanent prosthetic material.

Repairs the heart defect and then reabsorbs it. At Sant'Eugenio Hospital in Rome, "the first cases in Europe of percutaneous treatment of atrial septal defects using fully reabsorbable devices" were performed, the hospital reports in a statement. The procedures, performed by Achille Gaspardone and his interventional cardiology team, represent "an innovative step in the field of structural cardiology, thanks to the use of systems capable of guaranteeing closure of the defect without leaving permanent implants in the patient's heart," the statement reads.

The new technology aims to promote progressive biological integration of the device until complete resorption, with the "potential benefit of reducing long-term complications related to the presence of definitive prosthetic material," the experts highlight. According to the Sant'Eugenio team, the first procedures have been completed successfully and without immediate complications, opening "important prospects for the minimally invasive treatment of atrial septal defects and patent foramen ovale.".
